Lightweight, shallow tale is supercharged by 2 charismatic megastars, which make it a must see. Cast includes Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson: Jeff Daniels, Maureen Stapleton, Stockard Channing, Richard Masur, Catherine O’Hara, Steven Hill, Milos Forman, Karen Akers, Anna Maria Horsford, Mercedes Ruehl, Joanna Gleason, Yakov Smimoff, Kevin Spacey, and Natasha Lyonne. Air America: Guides Mel and Bob are part of the C.IA.?s smuggling operation in Laos throughout the Vietnam War. They crate anything and anyone anyplace. Supposed action comedy has few giggles and makes little sense. Cast includes Mel Gibson, Robert Downey, Jr., Nancy Travis, David Marshall Grant, Aisle Smith, Ken Jenkins, and Art La Fleur. Trade: A thirteen-year-old gal is kidnapped by members of a sex-trafficking ring. As her older brother follows her tracks, he hooks up with a Texas cop (Kline) who has his own rationales for chasing this outfit of bad guys. This downbeat drama reveals a stunning, debasing circumstance, although it’s maddeningly choppy, one second daring and commanding (particularly with Finnish actress Bachleda) and the next remarkably corny. Cast includes Kevin Kline, Alicia Bachleda, Paulina Gaitan, Kathleen Gati, Pasha D. Lychnikoff, Anthony Crivello, Linda Emond, Zack Ward, Cesar Ramos, Marco Perez, and Tim Reid. (120 minutes, 2007)
Only Two Pan Play: Well-intentioned filming of the Kingsley Amis novel That Undecided Sensation (adjusted by Bryan Forbes), yearning for fast giggles instead of satire. Peter Vendors is a librarian flirting with a local councilman?s wife. Will they take things too far? Cast includes Peter Vendors, Mai Zetterling, Virginia Maskell, Richard Attenborough, and Kenneth Griffith. (106 minutes,’62)
Good Luck: The tale of a blind guy and a paraplegic who plan to enter a white-water rafting race in request to demonstrate their own self esteem. The topic of glory over difficulty is farni1iar, although the film’s heart is in the right place. There are some sincerely amusing scenes. Cast includes Gregory Hines, Vincent D’Onofrio, James Earl Jones, Max Gail, Joe Theismann, Roy Firestone, Maria O’Brien, and Sara Spark. (98 minutes,’97)
Spice World: A fantasy view of a few nights in the lives of the pop phenomenon The Spice Girls and their presence with road agent Grant. Cameos by Elton John, Bob Hoskins, Bob Geldof, Elvis Costello, The Fantasy Boys, Jonathan Ross, and Jennifer Saunders. Cast includes The Flavor Gals (Mel B, Emma, Mel C, Geri, and Victoria), Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, George Wendt, Claire Rushbrook, Mark McKinney, Richard O’Brien, Barry Humphries, Jason Flemyng, Naoki Mari, Meat Loaf, Bill Paterson, Jools Holland, Stephen Roast, and Richard Briers. Lilo and Stitch: Forlorn Hawaiian gal being brought up by her older sibling finds a doubtful buddy at the dog pound an alien whom she names Sew. In the mean time, people from Stitch?s world have arrived in this to recover the damaging little creature. Gorgeous watercolor surroundings are simply spectacular. Cast includes Voices of Daveigh Pursue, Christopher Michael Sanders, Tia Carrere, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames, David Ogden Stiers, Zoe Caldwell, Jason Scott Lee, and Kevin Michael Richardson. (85 minutes, 2002)
Rhapsody in August: Average (by his own estimations) little Kurosawa is a piece in reference to the hurtful memories of a Japanese woman who recollects the bombing of Nagasaki at the end of WW2. Gere, in a hyped up cameo, doesn’t appear too out of place as a Japanese American member of the old lady’s lengthened family. Cast includes Sachiko Murase, Richard Gere, and Narumi Kayashima. (98 minutes,’91)
